This old-style recipe turns the ingredients and flavors of a classic shrimp cocktail into a satisfying main salad.

With a variety of standard cocktail sauce, it combines romaine lettuce, avocado slices, tomato wedges, cucumbers, sweet onions, sauteed shrimp and takes less than 25 minutes to prepare.

This shrimp salad is from the original Mexican cuisine, and it is one of the foods that many flock to during the summer months. Easy to make, and the ingredients can be adjusted to your liking. It is great with ordinary salt. However, to be authentic, put the salad on a plate and drink it with cubed avocado and a sprinkle of hot sauce bottled for a true experience of fun!

Shrimp cocktails may be classic from the 1980s, but in my recipe library, it has never been seen before and never miss an opportunity to try it out!

In the past, shrimp cocktails were only served in luxury restaurants. Nowadays, many restaurants offer fresh versions of shrimp cocktails. Paint them in a fancy fashion, with up-to-date sumptuous sauces.

For me, I prefer the perfect classic dish as it is.

How to make shrimp cocktail sauce (Mary Rose sauce)

Shrimp cocktails are served with shrimp cocktail sauce (also known as Mary Rose sauce) consisting of mayonnaise, ketchup and Worcestershire sauce, with radish (optional). It's fast and easy to make, and it's much better than the purchased seafood sauce store that tends to be artificial around and often too sour or salty.

How to serve shrimp cocktail

I present them in glass cups or glasses. However, you do not need great cups for shrimp cocktails. Yes they are nice served in the glass. But they are absolutely delicious and attractive in any small bowl as well. And if this is not available, then there is no problem. Serve them in lettuce cups! (Great idea for an appetizer!)

Different ideas for serves

As we mentioned, there are many differences in the way the shrimp cocktail ingredients work, but I like to keep them classic because they are just as great! But here are some additional ideas: cubed avocado, well-cut vegetables or dill pickles, a hint of spices from Sriracha or Tabasco in the sauce, mango cubes, and fresh dill.

  • 1-1 / 4 lbs large shrimp, peeled and deveined, leaving tails
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

For dressing:

  • Half a cup of bottled chili sauce
  • 1 to 4 tablespoons of prepared radish (see notes)
  • Two tablespoons of fresh lemon juice
  • 1-1 / 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise
  • 1-2 tablespoons of milk
  • Freshly ground black pepper

For salad:

  • 1 large Roman lettuce, cut into small pieces
  • 8 campari tomatoes (or 2 medium) cut into wedges
  • 2 ripe avocado hasas pitted, peeled and sliced
  • 1 cucumber, peeled and chopped
  • 4 thin slices of sweet onion, separated


  1. Place shrimp, garlic, oil and lemon juice in a mixing bowl. Season the mixture slightly with salt and fresh black pepper and stir the mixture.
  2. Put a large skillet over medium heat. Add shrimp and fry until it turns pink and opaque, for 2 to 4 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Prepare the sauce by stirring the chili sauce, radish, lemon juice and mayonnaise in a small bowl. Just add enough milk to produce a creamy texture, leave a little bit of fresh ground pepper and set aside.
  4. To assemble the salads, arrange a layer of lettuce on each of 4 plates and higher with tomato wedges and slices of avocado, cucumber and onion. Shrimp is divided between authorities and each piece is sprinkled with sauce.


* The heat and flavor of the prepared radish can vary slightly in density. Start with one or two tablespoons of the dressing and adjust it to suit your taste buds.
** This recipe turns your favorite delicacy into a fun dinner salad; serves salad with lemon wedges on the side.
*** To reduce fat by about 9 grams per serving, use light mayonnaise instead of regular mayonnaise.
